Detailed description of Hemlock Golf Club

Hemlock Golf Club is a Public , 18 hole golf course located just north of Ludington, Michigan, between Muskegon and Traverse City.

Hemlock Golf Club first opened for play in 2002. The course was designed by Raymond Hearn,

Hemlock Golf Club is a formidable 18-hole, 7044-yard course parkland style golf course sculpted from natural landscape.

The course is well bunkered with some good sized waste bunkers running the length of the holes. The front side is mostly tame warming you up for a tougher back, split fairways, elevation change, wetlands, forced carries, and doglegs. Good solid golf course, nice views, well conditioned, and fair rates.

Black tees: par-72, 7,037 yards, 73.4 / 139

Blue tees: par-72, 6,720 yards, 71.6 / 136

White tees: par-72, 6,265 yards, 69.6 / 132

Red tees: par-72, 5,775 yards, 68.0 / 123(M), 72.8 / 131(W)

Yellow tees: par-72, 4,901 yards, 67.9/ 116

Back in the area with my complete Family (17) camping and my Boy's wanted to give Hemlock GC another try. When we played here four (4) years ago, it was very dry and "Hard Pan" spots were scattered about the fairways. Not the case this year as the weekly rains kept everything green throughout Western Michigan and here at Hemlock also. We decided to play from the Green's which play 3,322/3,322yds / 71.9 / 139 on this treelined Par 36/36 layout with LOTS of sand. The fairways are mostly straight forward with fair landing areas but if you miss.......it's nothing but swamp or woods. I'm only going to talk mainly about two (2) holes because that's all the boys talked about as being"Un-Fair" on our way back to camp. On the Front 9 the #6 Par 5 at 540yds stands out as just narrow and ending with a elevated front protected green just adds salt to a open wound. But the Back 9 #11 a Hcp 3 at 495yds seems short but is a true three (3) shot hole as the fairway is broken up with two (2) landing pads leaving a 100yd 3rd shot to a very narrow 40' elevated green with a steep sand trap front and a grassy runoff to the rear. This is followed up by #12 their 565yd Hcp 1 hole that starts with a divided fairway with a tree blocking the middle and sand traps guarding the outside edges to this narrow landing areas. Now if your tee shot choose's the rightside fairway a 150-180yd 2nd shot is all you can hit before getting into a 180yd sandtrap that leads to the hidden green on the other side of the hill. There is a sliver of fairway on the left side but OB lurks if you over shoot too far to the left so take a double look and yardage check before taking that 3rd swing. I was the only one that didn't have any OB's today so my 83 w/36 putts went uncontested......at least for today. With all three (3) boys having three (3) OB's each its shows that short grass (also driving distance) and sneaking onto the greens......has its rewards. This is a must play if your in this great vacationing area and for $45.00 it dosen't get any better for a challenge.

Decided to revisit Hemlock GC as I was in the area again and I had good memories of my last visit. The weekday pricing of $35 for senior is great for this Ray Hearn design that stretches from 4,328yd 64.5/112 to 6,965yds 73.8/142 in this wooded, rolling terrain and sand infested layout. This layout is very similar to his other course in Jackson,MI "The Grand" only sand replaces the wetlands. The fairways conditions were the major disappointment as the dryness produced spotty hard pan areas. This caused some excessive roll outs with tough fairway shots, leading to selective shot making. The large but soft greens were rolling 8-10 and made it exciting once you got there. Sand traps were everywhere but played Very fair upon arrival. Ended up playing from the Green Tees 6,644yds / 71.9 / 139 on this par 36/36 layout. I shot 42/43 w/36putts, Jeremy had 87w/32putts, Kevin 89 w/37 putts and Barry 97w/35putts finding too many traps to count. Looking forward to returning again sometime soon.

WoW!! What a track!! Normally we play a lesser priced course in this area but decided to spend the extra. Week day price of $45 and Senior @ $35 is a no brainier for this level of course. No GPS on the carts was a surprise and is needed to figure out the landing areas on the many blind hole shots you'll encounter. My "Sky Caddie" proved to be a shot saver on many of the par 5 holes where target golf is required. We played from the greens (6,644yds) and the landing areas were very fair for 220 - 240 yd drives coming short of the many fairway bunkers. Greens rolled very true and fast (recently sanded) with 38 putts being the average for the four of us playing. I shot 89/38putts (4hrs) and had more sand shots than I care to ever have again. The greens are well protected on all sides forcing you to hit the green because "Saves" come at a high premium as I only had two (2) all day. Bring your "A" game, stay in the fairway, pick your landing areas and read the putts from both sides and you'll have alot of fun. Will put this on my list to play again real soon and you should too.

Great course! lack of proper clubhouse is the only thing keeping it from being a championship course on level with Arcadia Bluffs.
